THE ISLAMIC YEAR

ENDING AND BEGINNING OF THE ISLAMIC YEAR

Today is the 29th Zul Hijjah. If the moon is sighted this evening, the Islamic year of 1443 will end and the new Islamic year of 1444 will commence.

Whoever closes the year with Fasting and begins the newyear with fasting is most fortunate. If the moon is not sighted this evening, tomorrow will then be the 30th Zul Hijjah which gives you the opportunity for closing the year with fasting.

It is mentioned in the Hadith that fasting on 1st Muharram secures for one forgiveness of the previous year’s sins.

Nafl Fasting for the month of Muharram comprises three categories.

(1)    Fasting  on the 1st Muharram

(2)    Fasting the first ten days. This will include fasting on the Day of Aashura (the 10th).

(3)    Fasting only on the 9th and 10th OR the 10th and 11th.

PLEASE NOTE:

The custom of exchanging gifts on the Day of Aashura is bid’ah.

Wealthy people who daily consume lavish and delicious meals should spend more on poor families on the Day of Aashura. Give to those who are unable to afford the luxuries you consume 365 days every year. Such Sadqah is not part of any custom.
